Appeal for volunteers and donations for 2008 YMCA Flag Day

YMCA of Singapore will hold its annual Flag Day on Wednesday, 10 December 2008, targeting to raise $60,000 to enrich the lives of the intellectually, mentally and physically challenged, out-of-school youth, youth-at-risk, under-privileged & abused children, the poor and elderly. 450 volunteers are needed for Flag Day and they will be stationed island-wide to sell flags.

Proceeds will go towards the YMCA Community Service Programmes, a series of 15 structured and sustained programmes aimed at enriching the lives of beneficiaries through activities, such as gardening, dancing, singing, arts and craft, outing, reading, nature walks and educational tours. YMCA serves more than 1,500 beneficiaries through the partnerships with 21 partner voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs). The donations will also be channelled to the YMCA Project Bridge programme, which works with out-of-school youth and youth-at-risk to help them integrate back into society and employment as well as YMCA FACES, a Financial Assistance & Capability for Employment Scheme. This programme involves providing employment opportunities for the special needs youth of APSM, apprenticeship scheme for Project Bridge youth and a financial assistance scheme for the needy.

How you can help:

a) Volunteer to sell flags from 9:30am to 3:30pm or 2:00pm to 6:30pm.

b) Adopt a tin can @ $50 for individuals

c) Adopt a tin can @ $500 for corporations

Donors may also send cheques payable to "YMCA of Singapore" and mail to ‘One Orchard Road, Singapore 238824’. All donations received are doubled tax exempted. Kindly include your name, address, IC number and ‘YMCA Flag Day 2008’ on the overleaf of the cheque to receive an official acknowledgement.

The five reporting centres are YMCA of Singapore, Ang Mo Kio MRT station, Woodlands MRT station, Jurong East MRT station and Bedok Central (open area at Block 209). The competitions will be run on an inter-CT basis. The participating CTs will accumulate points for their respective Faculty. The Faculty that accumulates the most number of points will be the Champion Faculty.

Boys Basketball (5+3)
Girls Street Soccer (4+1)
Girls Street Basketball (3+2)
Girls Street Netball (4+2)
Mixed Floorball (2 boys 2 girls +2 boy 2 girl reserves)
Mixed Volleyball (3 boys 3 girls +1 boy 1 girl reserves)
Mixed Frisbee (3 boys 3 girls + 2 boy 2 girl reserves)

Each CT is allowed to register ONE team for each game. Each student is allowed to take part in ONE game only. Student can only represent his/her own CT.

Choose a game that you're interested in and tell me! Get people to join with you! The more the merrier!(: And due to the fact that we don't've many guys in class, I think we should pool our resources together and take part in the mixed games..(: But of course the girls can take part in all the games lah.(: Haha.

okay, today was an okay day.

I am happy as my group has won the debate for our motion! due to my good common sense of absorbing bryan into our group, as he along with sara and the rest of us (bella, xiuqi, laypeng and of course me!) have good dynamics and worked as a group (hahaha, i think we discussed it for like 5 minutes?) and mrs tan says we have cohesion! and thus the hello panda is ours!

And to elaine's group's disappointment, they couldn't get the other box of hello panda. im so sorry but ours were gone before i don't know what. Actually, I wanted to put the picture of PANDARINE here but i realised the people who have his pictures are not online or have not sent me the pictures of him. He is so cute! i have been showing him to everyone i know. hahaha. But i left him in school today. I hope he is still there.

The universe is filled with massive clouds of dust. From past studies, scientists have learned that this cosmic dust can, in the presence of plasma, creates formations known as plasma crystals. An international team of researchers published a study in the Aug.14, 2007, issue of the New Journal of Physics that indicates that these crystals may be more sophisticated than anyone realized. In simulations involving cosmic dust, the researchers witnessed the formation of plasma crystals displaying some of the elementary characteristics of life -- DNA-like structure, autonomous behavior, reproduction and evolution.

Before we get into how it works, let's talk about plasma. Plasma is the fourth state of matter. When gas is superheated, electrons are torn from atoms and become free floating. The gas then becomes ionized, carrying a positive charge. This superheated mix of ionized gas and free-floating electrons makes up plasma. Stars are mostly plasma, as is about 99 percent of the matter of the universe, though plasma is much less common on Earth, where we're used to dealing with solids, liquids and gases. Besides being found in stars and in our sun, plasma is transported by solar winds and magnetic fields, often coming into contact with dust clouds like those the researchers studied.

When plasma comes into contact with a dust cloud, dust particles gather an electric charge by sucking up electrons from the surrounding plasma. This core of electrons in turn pulls in positively charged ions, forming plasma crystals. In the scientists' simulations, which were performed on the International Space Station and in a zero-gravity environment at a German research facility, the plasma crystals sometimes developed into corkscrew shapes or even the double-helix shape of DNA. These helix-shaped crystals retain an electric charge and show what the researchers called a self-organizing ability.

In simulations, plasma crystals sometimes assume the double-helix shape of DNA.

Once in helix form, the crystals can reproduce by diving into two identical helixes, displaying "memory marks" on their structures [source: New Journal of Physics]. The diameter of the helixes varies throughout the structure and the arrangement of these various sections is replicated in other crystals, passing on what could be called a form of genetic code.

They even seem to evolve. The formations become sturdier over time as weaker structures break down and disappear.

The researchers want to test whether dust clouds in a non-simulated environment, such as those in Saturn's rings, form helixes and exhibit these behaviors. But the plasma crystals are fragile and difficult to test. They also require a consistent flow of plasma or else they "die."

If they exist in the simulated form, the researchers believe that the crystal organisms could be found in the rings of Uranus and Saturn, which are made up of small grains of ice.

So they form DNA-like shapes, reproduce, pass on their structure or genetic code, "eat" plasma, evolve and die.

In July 2007, a group of American scientists, in association with the National Research Council, issued a report recommending that scientists search for so-called weird life on other worlds, in space and even on Earth. Weird life is believed to be far different from life forms we're used to seeing. Weird life may be organisms that don't depend on water or that don't have DNA at all. Some people even believe that weird life existed on Earth in the ancient past and that it may still exist on this planet. In reality, scientists don't know what weird life is, but its presence has many reexamining notions of what alien life may be and where it might be found.

Whether or not the plasma crystals are an example of weird life is difficult to determine. Some of the questions regarding these potential organisms come back to the debate about what life is. For example, on Earth, we consider life to be carbon-based and dependent on the presence of water. Life forms also perform certain basic functions, like reproducing, evolving and metabolizing. But even using those functions as a classification can be tricky. David Grier, a physics professor at New York University, told New Scientist that "there is no mathematically rigorous definition of life," which makes it difficult to call these crystals "alive" [source: New Scientist Space ].

Gregor Morfill, one of the experiment's participants, said that while the crystals contain a lot of the "hallmarks" of life, they're still "just a special form of plasma crystal" [source: New Scientist Space]. Another of the researchers, V.N. Tsytovich, said that the clusters have "all the necessary properties to qualify them as candidates for inorganic living matter" [source:Science Daily]. The researchers also stated that while they're not ready to confidently state that these structures represent a new form of life, their study should add to the discussion of how scientists define life [source: USA Today].

If the plasma crystals do exist in their simulated form, they live and develop at a pace at least a hundred thousand times slower than Earth's biological organisms. The question is then raised: given their fragility and slow pace of development, can they become intelligent or sentient?

If they are considered life, it may mean that these organisms are the most common life form in the universe, given the prevalence of plasma and massive interstellar dust clouds. There has also been some suggestion that these inorganic life forms somehow spurred development of organic life on Earth.

OHMYGOD!

CT OUTING WAS FREAKING FUN!

ANYWAY, yesterday was our supposedly "ct outing". BUT

5 out of 26 came in the afternoon and 8 out of 26 came for the dinner.

that is so fun!

the people who turned up are less than the people who turned up for my og outing which was quite sad already.

HOWEVER, we will not be affected by this small obstacle in our lives. :) we will continue to persevere and HOPEFULLY we will have a SUCCESSFUL ct outing! :D

and because of the small number of people turning up, we do not have pictures to put up! so next time more people come so we can have MANY pictures! :D

Okay, after discussing with some people, here's what we've.

We'll be setting up 2 stalls - games and drinks.

GAMES

01. Ping-a-pong!
Rules:
a) The player is given 5 ping pong balls.
b) He has to throw the 5 ping pong balls into the “holes” in the egg carton. Each “hole” is painted using a different colour. Each colour signifies a different number of points.
c) Prizes will be awarded at the end of the game.

02. Ring-a-ring!
Rules:
a) The player is given 5 rings.
b) He has to throw the 5 rings into the necks of the bottles.
c) Each successive throw will be awarded with a prize.

DRINKS

01. Milo dino
02. Horlick dino
03. Coffee dino etc..

More suggestions're welcome as the above's not finalised. Just what we've come up with so far during a random mass convo.(: Haha.

We have an annual inter-ct blogging event coming up! From today till 19th March, the judges of the competition would be looking at our blogs and decide which class has the best blog.

Below are the information about the competition:
Theme: Live with Passion
(showcase how your classmates and teachers live life to the fullest
and with passion... study with passion, play with passion, dance
with passion...)

Prizes: S$1,000 worth of meal vouchers!
This sum is divided into the following:
1st: S$400
2nd: S$300
3rd: S$200
4th: S$100
Judging Criteria - CAP:
1. C for Content/Thematic Coherence (50%): i.e. Showcase how
you “Live with Passion”
2. A for Aesthetics (20%)
3. P for Participation (30%)

Timeline:
Students’ Preparation – 27th Feb (Wed) to 19th March (Wed)
Competition ends on 19th March 2359h
Judging of Blogs in phases before and after closing date
